Shirodhara (Shiro = head, Dhara = stream) is one of the best-known Ayurvedic therapies. Warm medicated liquid flows in a steady, rhythmic stream on the forehead (the Ajna point) for 30–45 minutes, which most people find deeply relaxing.
Depending on the problem, the doctor chooses Taila dhara (oil), Ksheera dhara (medicated milk) or Takra dhara (buttermilk). It is used mainly to calm aggravated Vata and Pitta affecting the mind and sleep.
How Shirodhara is done
- Doctor assessment and choice of oil or liquid.
- A light head and shoulder massage (Shiroabhyanga).
- You lie on the Droni table with eyes covered; the Dhara pot is set above the forehead.
- Warm liquid flows in a swinging, steady stream for 30–45 minutes.
- Gentle head massage, rest, and advice to avoid cold wind, head bath and screens for a few hours.
Who Shirodhara may suit
Shirodhara may suit people with stress, anxiety, insomnia (Anidra), tension headache, migraine tendency, mental fatigue, high Pitta and some scalp or hair-fall concerns.
Precautions before Shirodhara
- Not done with fever, acute cold or sinus congestion, or right after a meal.
- People with low blood pressure or recent head injury need the doctor's clearance.
- Tell the doctor about any medicines you take, pregnancy, recent illness, high blood pressure, heart or kidney problems before the therapy. Do not stop any prescribed medicine on your own.
