In Karna Purana, warm medicated oil such as Bilva or Kshara taila is poured into each ear in turn and held for a short time, after a gentle massage around the ear and neck.
Ayurveda advises Karna Purana to calm Vata in the ear and head, and as part of Dinacharya.
How Karna Purana is done
- Ear examination to rule out infection or perforation.
- Massage around the ears, neck and face.
- Warm oil poured into one ear while you lie on your side, held for a few minutes.
- Oil drained and the ear cleaned; repeated on the other side.
Who Karna Purana may suit
May suit dry, itchy ears, tinnitus (supportive), Vata-type ear discomfort, stress and poor sleep.
Precautions before Karna Purana
- Not with ear discharge, infection, a perforated eardrum or ear surgery.
- Tell the doctor about any medicines you take, pregnancy, recent illness, high blood pressure, heart or kidney problems before the therapy. Do not stop any prescribed medicine on your own.
