Vamana is a supervised procedure in which, after Snehapana, oil massage and steam, the patient drinks herbal liquids that induce controlled vomiting to remove excess Kapha. It is usually done in spring (Vasanta).
Vamana is the first of the five Panchakarma procedures and the main cleansing for Kapha dosha in the chest and stomach.
How Vamana is done
- Detailed fitness assessment.
- Snehapana with medicated ghee for 3–7 days.
- Abhyanga and Swedana; Kapha-increasing diet the day before.
- Vamana in the early morning under close monitoring.
- Dhoomapana (herbal smoke) if advised, rest and graded diet.
Who Vamana may suit
Vamana may suit bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, recurrent cough, obesity, PCOS with Kapha features, and chronic skin conditions — strictly after assessment.
Precautions before Vamana
- Not for children, elderly, pregnant, very weak patients, or people with heart disease, hernia or bleeding disorders.
- Tell the doctor about any medicines you take, pregnancy, recent illness, high blood pressure, heart or kidney problems before the therapy. Do not stop any prescribed medicine on your own.
Vamana in Varanasi at Aarogyam Shri Ayurveda
Vamana at our Varanasi (Banaras) clinic is done by trained therapists under the supervision of an Ayurveda doctor, who first checks your Prakriti, current health and reports. The doctor then decides the oils or medicines, the number of sittings and the diet to follow during the course.
