Nasya is one of the five Panchakarma procedures. After a face massage and steam, a measured dose of medicated oil (such as Anu taila) is put into each nostril and gently inhaled.
Ayurveda calls the nose the gateway to the head (Nasa hi shiraso dwaram). Nasya is used for disorders above the collarbone (Urdhvajatrugata roga).
How Nasya is done
- Face and forehead massage with oil.
- Mild steam to the face.
- Medicated drops put into each nostril while you lie with the head tilted back.
- Gentle massage of the face, palms and soles; spit out any secretions.
- Warm-water gargle and rest away from cold wind.
Who Nasya may suit
Nasya may suit chronic sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, recurrent cold, headache, migraine, hair fall and neck stiffness.
Precautions before Nasya
- Not done right after meals, bath or during acute fever, and not during pregnancy without advice.
- Tell the doctor about any medicines you take, pregnancy, recent illness, high blood pressure, heart or kidney problems before the therapy. Do not stop any prescribed medicine on your own.
Nasya in Varanasi at Aarogyam Shri Ayurveda
Nasya at our Varanasi (Banaras) clinic is done by trained therapists under the supervision of an Ayurveda doctor, who first checks your Prakriti, current health and reports. The doctor then decides the oils or medicines, the number of sittings and the diet to follow during the course.
