Jalaukavacharana is the classical Ayurvedic leech therapy. Sterile, medicinal leeches are applied to the affected area; their saliva contains natural substances that act on local blood flow and swelling.
It is a type of Raktamokshana (bloodletting), one of the five Panchakarma procedures, used mainly in Pitta and Rakta (blood) disorders.
How Leech therapy is done
- Doctor examination and blood tests if needed (Hb, clotting).
- The area is cleaned; a leech is placed and allowed to feed for 20–45 minutes.
- The leech detaches naturally or with a pinch of turmeric.
- The bite is cleaned, turmeric applied and the area dressed.
- Each leech is used for one patient only.
Who Leech therapy may suit
Leech therapy may suit varicose veins, non-healing ulcers, eczema, acne, alopecia areata, thrombosed piles and local inflammation.
Precautions before Leech therapy
- Not for anaemia, bleeding disorders, pregnancy, or people on blood thinners.
- Tell the doctor about any medicines you take, pregnancy, recent illness, high blood pressure, heart or kidney problems before the therapy. Do not stop any prescribed medicine on your own.
Leech therapy in Varanasi at Aarogyam Shri Ayurveda
Leech therapy at our Varanasi (Banaras) clinic is done by trained therapists under the supervision of an Ayurveda doctor, who first checks your Prakriti, current health and reports. The doctor then decides the oils or medicines, the number of sittings and the diet to follow during the course.
