Agnikarma is a para-surgical procedure described by Sushruta. A heated metal rod (Shalaka) touches the most tender points for a fraction of a second, creating small controlled superficial burns.
Sushruta describes Agnikarma for pain of Vata and Kapha origin in muscles, tendons and joints, especially where oils and medicines alone are slow to help.
How Agnikarma is done
- Doctor identifies the most tender points.
- The area is cleaned and marked.
- Heated Shalaka is touched to each point briefly.
- Aloe vera or Madhu-ghrita is applied; keep the area dry for 24 hours.
Who Agnikarma may suit
Agnikarma may suit plantar fasciitis / heel pain, calcaneal spur, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, trigger-finger pain and chronic localized muscle pain.
Precautions before Agnikarma
- Not for diabetics with poor sensation in the area, people with bleeding tendency, or over thin skin and the face.
- Tell the doctor about any medicines you take, pregnancy, recent illness, high blood pressure, heart or kidney problems before the therapy. Do not stop any prescribed medicine on your own.
