About Abhyanga — Ayurveda Oil Massage

Abhyanga is the classical Ayurvedic full-body massage done with warm herbal oil. Long, rhythmic strokes follow the direction of the body hair and the joints are worked in circular movements, which relaxes the muscles and calms the nervous system.

In Ayurveda, Abhyanga is part of Dinacharya (daily routine) and the first step (Snehana) before Panchakarma. It mainly balances Vata dosha — the dosha linked to dryness, stiffness, pain and disturbed sleep.

How Abhyanga is done

  1. Short check-up by the doctor to choose the oil (for example Bala, Mahanarayan or Ksheerabala taila).
  2. Oil is warmed and applied from head to feet while you lie on a wooden Droni table.
  3. Massage in seven positions with long strokes on the limbs and circular strokes on joints.
  4. Usually followed by Swedana (herbal steam) so the oil absorbs better.
  5. Rest for 15–20 minutes, then a warm-water bath; avoid cold water and heavy food that day.

Who Abhyanga may suit

Abhyanga may suit people with body ache and stiffness, fatigue, stress, poor sleep, dry skin, or those preparing for Panchakarma. It is also used as a wellness and relaxation therapy.

Precautions before Abhyanga

  • Not done during fever, indigestion, acute cold or immediately after meals.
  • Skipped over open wounds, active skin infection or fresh injury.
  • Tell the doctor about any medicines you take, pregnancy, recent illness, high blood pressure, heart or kidney problems before the therapy. Do not stop any prescribed medicine on your own.
