Shirodhara is a traditional Ayurvedic procedure involving a controlled flow of liquid over the forehead. It is often discussed in relation to relaxation.

At a glance

  • Understand the procedure before consenting.
  • Share symptoms and medicine details.
  • Relaxation does not prove treatment of a disease.

Shirodhara is a traditional Ayurvedic procedure involving a controlled flow of liquid over the forehead. It is often discussed in relation to relaxation. If you are considering it for sleep or stress, first ask how the procedure fits into an assessment of your symptoms and what benefit is realistically expected.

1. Ask what will happen in the session

The clinician should explain the liquid used, temperature control, positioning and duration. Ask how your eyes and face will be protected and what to do if you feel uncomfortable. An explanation should be understandable before you consent, not only after the procedure starts.

2. Share your full health history

Mention headaches, dizziness, skin sensitivity, recent illness, pregnancy and medicines. Tell the team if lying still is difficult or if you become anxious during procedures. Suitability cannot be decided from an attractive photograph or a package advertisement.

3. Separate relaxation from disease treatment

Feeling relaxed after a session does not establish that an underlying sleep disorder, anxiety condition or neurological illness has been treated. Ask about the quality of evidence for your specific concern. Continue appropriate medical assessment and prescribed treatment while discussing complementary care.

4. Set a review point

Agree what you will observe and when to review. For sleep concerns, keep a short record of bedtime, waking and daytime tiredness. If symptoms continue or worsen, reassess the plan instead of booking repeated sessions without discussion. Ask about costs and aftercare before making a decision.

Before your appointment

  • Write down your main concern and when it started.

  • Keep recent reports and all medicine or supplement names ready.

  • Ask what the next step is and when the plan will be reviewed.

This guide is general patient information. It cannot diagnose your condition or decide which medicine or procedure is suitable for you.

Your questions, answered

Is Shirodhara a guaranteed insomnia treatment?

No. Sleep problems have different causes, and a procedure should not be advertised as a guaranteed solution.

Can I stop the session if uncomfortable?

Yes. Tell the team and request an adjustment or stop. Your comfort and consent matter.

Buying Ayurvedic Medicines: Labels, Ingredients and Quality Questions

A professional-looking label is not enough to establish that a product is appropriate for you. Before buying an Ayurvedic medicine, check what it contains, who made it and why it is being recommended.
