Abhyanga is a traditional Ayurvedic oil application and massage practice. It may be offered as part of an individual care plan or a wellness session. Before booking, ask what is being proposed and why.

At a glance

  • Check oil ingredients and skin sensitivity.
  • Report injury, swelling and recent surgery.
  • Ask for adjustments and stop if uncomfortable.

Abhyanga is a traditional Ayurvedic oil application and massage practice. It may be offered as part of an individual care plan or a wellness session. Before booking, ask what is being proposed and why. A pleasant massage experience is not the same as evidence that it treats a particular disease.

1. Discuss the oil and your skin

Ask which product will be used and whether it contains fragrance or other ingredients. Mention eczema, broken skin, allergies and previous reactions. Do not apply an unfamiliar oil widely if you have a history of sensitivity without first discussing suitability.

2. Explain pain and other health concerns

Tell the practitioner about recent injury, surgery, swelling, fever or a condition affecting sensation. Ask how pressure and positioning will be adapted. A painful or swollen area may need medical assessment before massage rather than stronger pressure.

3. Know what the appointment includes

Confirm the session length, privacy arrangements and whether bathing or other preparation is advised. You should be able to request lighter pressure or stop at any point. Ask whether this is a supervised clinical recommendation or a general wellness service so your expectations are clear.

4. Review comfort without overstating results

Record how you feel during and after the session, including irritation or dizziness. Discuss persistent symptoms separately with a clinician. Abhyanga should not replace care for a serious joint, nerve or skin condition. Choose a plan that explains both its intended role and its limits.

Before your appointment

  • Write down your main concern and when it started.

  • Keep recent reports and all medicine or supplement names ready.

  • Ask what the next step is and when the plan will be reviewed.

This guide is general patient information. It cannot diagnose your condition or decide which medicine or procedure is suitable for you.

Your questions, answered

Can oil massage cure arthritis?

It should not be presented as a proven cure. Persistent joint pain needs diagnosis and an appropriate care plan.

Should massage hurt to be effective?

You do not need to tolerate pain. Tell the practitioner immediately and ask for the session to be adjusted or stopped.

A professional-looking label is not enough to establish that a product is appropriate for you. Before buying an Ayurvedic medicine, check what it contains, who made it and why it is being recommended.
