Kati Basti is a traditional local oil procedure used over the lower back in some Ayurvedic care plans. If you are exploring it for back discomfort, start with the cause of the pain. A local treatment cannot diagnose a disc problem, a nerve condition or another medical cause.

At a glance

  • Find out why your back hurts before choosing a procedure.
  • Check oil temperature and skin sensitivity.
  • Urgent neurological symptoms need medical assessment.

Kati Basti is a traditional local oil procedure used over the lower back in some Ayurvedic care plans. If you are exploring it for back discomfort, start with the cause of the pain. A local treatment cannot diagnose a disc problem, a nerve condition or another medical cause.

1. Describe the pain pattern clearly

Explain where the pain is, how long it has lasted and whether it travels into the leg. Mention numbness, weakness, injury or fever. The clinician may need further examination or investigation before discussing a local procedure.

2. Understand temperature and positioning

Ask which oil is used, how its temperature is monitored and how long you will remain in one position. Mention skin allergies or reduced sensation. Tell the team if lying on your stomach is difficult, so the plan can be adapted or reconsidered.

3. Ask about the wider care plan

Discuss whether exercise guidance, work adjustments or another medical opinion is needed. A procedure should have a defined place within care instead of replacing all other steps. Ask how improvement will be measured and what would make the clinician stop or change the plan.

4. Know when a blog is not enough

Back pain with new bladder or bowel problems, numbness around the groin or marked weakness needs urgent medical assessment. Do not wait for an oil treatment appointment in that situation. For non-urgent concerns, carry previous reports and ask which options are appropriate for your diagnosis.

Before your appointment

  • Write down your main concern and when it started.

  • Keep recent reports and all medicine or supplement names ready.

  • Ask what the next step is and when the plan will be reviewed.

This guide is general patient information. It cannot diagnose your condition or decide which medicine or procedure is suitable for you.

Your questions, answered

Can Kati Basti confirm a slipped disc?

No. Diagnosis requires a clinical assessment and tests when indicated.

Should I choose a package before the doctor sees me?

An assessment should come first. The clinician may recommend a different approach or further investigation.

Buying Ayurvedic Medicines: Labels, Ingredients and Quality Questions

A professional-looking label is not enough to establish that a product is appropriate for you. Before buying an Ayurvedic medicine, check what it contains, who made it and why it is being recommended.
